“We need to talk about Kelvin”
Join University of Glasgow scientist Professor Martin Hendry as he celebrates the remarkable life of Lord Kelvin and explores how his legacy still shapes the modern world.
2024 marks the bicentenary of the birth of William Thomson, later Lord Kelvin, who was Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow for more than 50 years and was one of the most important scientists of the 19th century. Kelvin made ground-breaking contributions to many areas of physics, maths and engineering – including pioneering work on heat, energy and temperature that underpins much of the science behind the climate emergency. He was also famous for turning fundamental scientific ideas into useful inventions that transformed people’s lives and played a major part in laying the first transatlantic telegraph cable – technology that transformed global communications in the mid-1900s just as much as the internet and mobile phones have done in the 21st century.
