In 2015 the gravitational wave window was opened on the Universe, allowing us to listen to the signals produced by coalescing black holes and neutrons stars. This was made possible by the amazing work of the LIGO Scientific  Collaboration which has pioneered the development of the LIGO interferometers, the world’s most sensitive length measuring devices.

Join Prof. Hammond, who led the design and installation of the mirror suspensions used in the LIGO interferometers, as he explores the technology which made the detection of gravitational waves a reality and rich data now coming out of the international network of detectors

Giles Hammond is with the Institute for Gravitational Research in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Glasgow. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and Institute of Physics and is an enthusiastic ambassador for physics through his outreach work with schools and public audiences.
