Our nearest star, the Sun, provides us with the energy necessary for life on Earth. But it can also pose a threat, due to its magnetic field, which is constantly being regenerated in its interior, and expelled into space in violent explosions known as coronal mass ejections. In this talk Professor Lyndsay Fletcher will give an overview of the Sun’s magnetic personality, including some ideas about where the magnetic field comes from, its fascinating and often beautiful consequences such as sunspots, active regions, solar flares and coronal mass ejections, and the impact of these on Earth.
